In this declaration on behalf of the European Union, the HR/VP expresses deep concern over the increasing number of self-immolations by Tibetans and links the protests to restrictions on expressions of Tibetan identity.
While reaffirming respect for China’s territorial integrity, the EU calls on Chinese authorities to address the underlying causes of Tibetan grievances and ensure respect for Tibetans’ civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, including the rights to practice their religion, preserve their culture, and use their language.
The EU urges China to respect freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, release individuals detained for peaceful protests, and allow access to Tibetan autonomous areas for diplomats and international journalists.
The EU also calls on Tibetans to refrain from self-immolation and encourages all parties to resume meaningful dialogue.
